Sicily is a gem, with an incredible history that dates back Millennia, with a rich culture where Greeks, on the East coast, Carthaginians, on the West coast, Romans, Roman-Byzantines, Saracens from North Africa, Normans, French, Spaniards and more recently “continental” Italians have played a leading role. The geography is also fascinating, with splendid beaches and an incredible Mountain Volcano (Etna) and a broad plateau. Well worth a period of study. The rest of Italy is undoubtedly just as interesting, so it all depends on what part you have a chance to “get at” and the subjects you are supposed to study.
Post these and we'll try and help you out.

Ok Kristina. Rome has the advantage of allowing you to live in a great capital, one of the World's most attractive ones, but... it will distract you terribly. It's full of life and has so much to offer people of all ages, but especially the young. I've been living here for ages, i can assure you.
A school in Sicily will allow you to meet Italian culture gradually and will give you an insight into one particular Region, without distracting you unduly. I've travelled to Sicily very often and toured it extensively.
Toss a coin and good luck.
Both options are positive.

Sicily is part of Italy and it's very beautiful but of course, you'd be more isolated. where in Italy is the other program?

Sicily is amazing. Because of it's location, it's so much more diverse than the mainland in my opinion. You have influences from Greece and Africa. Many places have a beautiful mix of Arabic and Italian style. It's a really cool melting pot. I have travelled extensively throughout Italy and Sicily is always my favorite. I'm not crazy about getting in and out of their airports, but once you are there it's utterly beautiful. Yes, there is a mafia influence, but its unlikely that you will ever experience it, it's more subtle than you see in the movies. The people of Sicily are generally warm and friendly. In some towns where the Mafia has more of a presence, say Enna or Palermo, or even parts of Siracusa area, people are a bit more suspicious and standoffish, but only until you warm them up and then they are just as friendly as anyone else. For me, the atmosphere and the beauty of Sicily is so unique and appealing. Don't get me wrong, I love the mainland, my parents are from La Marche, but my heart is really in Sicily. The coastal towns are so gorgeous, they are affordable and fun. The food is spectacular, lots of fresh seafood and the desserts in the Trapani/Palermo area are my favorite. I think you will have a more authentic experience in Sicily. I'm not sure which school you are considering in the mainland, but it's likely to be filled with English speaking people in a very english-comforting atmosphere. Whereas in Sicily, you are likely to be with other Europeans and you will really have a more "foreign" experience because it's not as popular as the schools in the mainland. There is a wonderful School in Cefalu which is about 40 minutes east of Palermo. Cefalu is a beautiful town and it's an easy and quick trainride to get into Palermo for bigger city activities. I just can't say enough great things about Sicily, if it were me in your shoes I have no doubt I would choose to go there.
