Most people living in Korea can easily save half of their salary if the housing is provided for free. It's possible to live on about $100 a week, especially if you can eat Korean food.

It's not as good as it was a year ago, but it's still possible to save money in Korea.

It's still profitable to save up money in Korea. Its not what you make but the cost of living that makes it worth while. You don't pay rent for starters, and most things are cheaper then you are used to, especially if you live in a more isolated area then Seoul or Busan. For example where I am a taxi drive is about 2300 - 5000 won - so just a couple of dollars instead of 6-15 like it would be in my home town. If you like Korean food its cheaper to eat. Its cheaper to go to the movies, go to live shows, get drunk, travel to other cities, stay in motels, etc. Also keep in mind that you can save your money until a day when the won is doing well so you don't lose as much of it.

well depends where you live
but if you want to teach english
its probably seoul

seoul expenses are probably similar to any big city in america
and everything is pretty convenient, transportation/fastfood/etc.

even though expenses are high, id say that youd earn a decent amount and if youre from a good college or background, you could probably earn a lot because tutors are very very popular in korea

Yes, it is because

a) living expenses are smaller than US overall. Most consumer goods are cheaper. GDP per capita in Korea is approximately 22k~27k which is lower than US' 45k. So take the ratio from the GDP per capita and apply it to the general purchasing items. Taxes are also cheaper in Korea. VAT is 10% but it is readily applied so you don't really notice the significance. However, despite the cheapness compared to US, electronics, home appliances, or any other products that involve internationally recognized brand name products, than it is more expensive. (ex. iPods, laptops, cars)

b) Recent devaluation of the KRW currency is just a slump. It will gradually come back in future. Those who have bought USD with KRW when it was 1USD= 950Won would've made a lot of money depending on their investments. Anyhoo, it would be better to save up most of your earnings until currency balances out.

c) Also, average is 2 million Won a month. However, you can usually earn more. If you have graduated from a reputable college with a good GPA, you can probably find a place upto 4 million Won a month. Also, high 10% is about 5 ~ 6 million Won a month which is pretty high (including housing). English education in Korea can be very lucrative job so if you like teaching English and dealing with children please come.

☆Only Notice you should take is adaptation to the Korean culture.
I have seen some foreigners who just missed American style of living.
If you are very open to new ideas and culture, I highly recommend Korea as a place to be personally. Japan is expensive and some places in China and Taiwan could be pretty scuzzy. I'm not saying there is no scuzzy part of the town in Korea, but it is overall better place to be.

Hopefully you will find your journey up to Eastern Asia and bring back a valuable life experience that will change you forever.
