Both previous answers are right. Catalonia (capital Barcelona) is an autonomous region (for us it is a nation) with a different language (Catalan) and different customs and institutions.

I would add:

- David Villa could not play for Catalonia, as he's not Catalan, but from Asturias. Same for example with Iniesta, even if he plays at a Catalan team (like Xavi or Piqué) like FC Barcelona, he's not Catalan but from Castile.

- As long as Catalonia is not allowed to play official competitions but only friendly matches, Catalan players will always be able to play with Spain and with Catalonia.

If Catalonia became an independent state they would play for Catalonia only. But if Catalonia were allowed to play official competitions with the present political situation (like Scotland or Wales do), I suppose the players would have to opt for one or the other national team.

I would add:

- David Villa could not fool around for Catalonia, as he’s not Catalan, though from Asturias. Same for e.g. with Iniesta, even if he plays during a Catalan group (like Xavi or Piqué) similar to FC Barcelona, he’s not Catalan though from Castile.

- As prolonged as Catalonia is not authorised to fool around central competitions though usually accessible matches, Catalan players will regularly be means to fool around with Spain as well as with Catalonia.

If Catalonia became an eccentric state they would fool around for Catalonia only. But if Catalonia were authorised to fool around central competitions with a benefaction domestic incident (like Scotland or Wales do), we suspect a players would have to opt for a single or a alternative inhabitant team.

Catalonia is an autonomous region of Spain, like the Basque region. The region is not recognized by FIFA and can not participate in FIFA sanctioned competitions. As such, the players you cite above are eligible to play for Spain as, legally, they have Spanish passports.
